Cervical Spinal Cord Injury / East Lansing, Michigan
Caroline was born crack-addicted and alcohol-exposed in Detroit, MI. A product of the foster care system she had significant developmental delays until age 3. In 2006, just six weeks into kindergarten, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. A year later she developed symptoms of radiation injury to her brain and spinal cord.
She has a cervical spinal cord injury, hearing loss, and significant muscle weakness. Due to pelvic obliquity she has a remarkable leg length discrepancy. While in therapy, she fell in love with her hand cycle exercises which allowed her a great sense of independence and fulfillment.
Now in the ninth grade, Caroline is fun-loving and socially engaged with others, regardless of her challenges. She is a member of LansingStrong, whose members participate in the Michigan Victory Games each year, and she hopes to compete in the biking event.
Getting Back Up is proud to support Caroline with an Invacare Top End Excelerator Hand Cycle to achieve her dreams of competing in the Michigan Victory Games each year.
